CUC Seeking Part-Time Sabbatical Minister

Central Unitarian Church in Westwood, NJ, is seeking an experienced part-time minister in relationship with the UUA Ministerial Fellowship Committee to serve during our settled minister’s sabbatical, beginning January 2025 and continuing through May 2025.

CUC is a congregation of 170 members and friends located in Northern New Jersey. Originally founded in Hackensack, NJ, in 1897, CUC spent 65 years in Paramus, NJ, until deciding to sell its building and property and relocate to Westwood, NJ. The congregation is actively engaged in a process of transformation toward their new future. In addition to their Sunday morning programming for children, youth, and adults, they actively support a number of local community partners, including the Center for Food Action, Family Promise, Northern New Jersey Sanctuary Coalition, and the Bergen County LGBTQ+ Alliance.

We seek a part-time minister to work with our Board, our staff (Director of Family Faith Formation, Congregational Administrator, Music Director, and Choir Director), and our dedicated volunteers during this period.

We seek a candidate who will lead engaging worship services, offer emergency pastoral care if needed, help to handle any urgent congregant needs, and work collaboratively with our board, staff, and lay leaders. The candidate will report to the CUC Board and will be supported by the Sabbatical Ministry Committee.

Responsibilities include:
Lead 2-3 services/month (on site), January 2025 through May 2025. Our services are conducted live and virtually, and we have a well-established technical support team.

Apart from leading services, the candidate would be expected to work 10-12 hours per month, primarily virtually but occasionally in person, toward the following leadership responsibilities:

  • Attend every board meeting (2 hours/month, on Zoom).
  • Support and supervise staff.
  • Be available as needed for select committee meetings on Zoom (i.e. Sabbatical Ministry Committee, Committee on Shared Ministry, Pastoral Care).
  • Support the Pastoral Care Team and provide select emergency pastoral care.
  • Support the Membership Committee as needed, welcoming new friends and members.

Compensation: $14,000 for the duration of leave service.

Deadline to apply: August 15, 2024
